GARBER ARTS AND CRAFTS ADDITION ON THE BAY

MORGAN'S POINTE, TEXAS

COMPLETED: 2016

The scope of work undertaken by the architect was an addition comprising a two story entertaining porch (900 sq. ft.), a four car garage (1550 sq. ft.), and 2nd floor apartment (950 sq. ft.).  Previous to this architect's involvement, the owners were nearing completion of an extensiveremodel of the interior and exterior of the existing house, originally designed in 1911 by prominent architect, Alfred C. Finn.  The new aesthetic defined by the owner's drew from late Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and the Aesthetic Movement and was primarily inspired by the Arts and Crafts house the owner's resided in New Orleans previous to occupying this one.  The addition is intended to integrate seamlessly with the newly remodeled, yet still maintain a distinction between the existing house and the addition; this achieved by the large porch bridging the old and new.

The house is located in a Historic district of Morgan's Point.  In 1893, several wealthy families acquired 40 acres of land on the Bay with the intention of creating a  resort community of summer homes as a retreat from Houston.  This house constitutes one of these resort homes and the community is regarded as one of Texas' most significant seaside developments.

The addition and main house renovation was featured as a Reader's Favorite in Old House Journal!  Click here to read the article.
