​NEUHAUS RESIDENCE

KEMAH, TEXAS

COMPLETED: 2010


The site for this project is the Galveston Bay in Kemah.  The client desired ample exterior areas to enjoy this natural beauty.  The exterior porches area is 2560 sq. ft., which is about equal to the interior conditioned area, whose total enclosed area including the garage is 4150 sq. ft.  To further invite this natural beauty into the interior of the residence, a two story gabled space defines the entry and living area and continues to the exterior porches.  Timber pilings, common as a structural system for this area because of flood plain elevation requirements and its natural resiliency, also becomes the aesthetic defining the gabled areas.  As an exposed structural system, the detailing of steel plate connectors were critical in the appreciation of this aesthetic.
